Hosting
My hosting provider processes the following data in server log files that your browser automatically transmits when you visit the website:
IP address, referrer URL, date and time of the request, time zone difference from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), content of the request, HTTP status code, amount of data transferred, the website from which the request originated, and information about the browser and operating system.
This processing is necessary in order to provide the website and to ensure its stability and security. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interests).
No tracking takes place and I do not have direct access to these log files.
I use the following hosting provider to make this website available:
GitHub, Inc.
88 Colin P Kelly Jr St
San Francisco, CA 94107
United States
GitHub receives personal data processed in connection with the provision of this website. I use GitHub Pages in my legitimate interest in providing a reliable and secure website without operating my own server infrastructure. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.
The servers used by GitHub may be located in the United States. Further information on GitHub’s handling of personal data can be found in GitHub’s Privacy Statement.
You have the right to object to processing based on Article 6(1)(f) GDPR on grounds relating to your particular situation. Whether such an objection prevails must be assessed on the basis of a balancing of interests.
The data will be deleted when it is no longer necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, subject to any applicable legal retention obligations.
The processing described in this section is neither legally nor contractually required. However, without it, the functionality and security of the website cannot be guaranteed.
For international data transfers, GitHub states that it implements appropriate safeguards, including the EU Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable.
Legal Notice regarding hosting
As a general rule, a data processing agreement may be required where a service provider processes personal data on behalf of the controller under Article 28 GDPR. However, the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision has stated in a published FAQ that the hosting of purely static websites used for self-presentation, where no personal data from page visits is transmitted to the website operator and no user tracking takes place, does not constitute processing on behalf of the controller. The FAQ further states that the short-term storage of IP addresses by the host is attributable to the telecommunications service provided by the host and primarily serves the host’s security purposes.
I assume that this assessment is applicable to the hosting of this website via GitHub Pages.
